Stress and your health
Stress and tension are unfortunately both a part of our modern lifestyle and can affect almost everyone at some time in their life. Occasional stress is not necessarily a bad thing and can help one to perform at one's peak when the pressure is on. Chronic stress, however, leads to imbalance in our minds and bodies, with a potentially devastating effect on both health and feelings of well-being.
Chronic stress has a major impact on your psychological and physical health and has been shown to play a crucial role in the development of a range of diseases and disorders. Most commonly, increased production of stress hormones and muscle tension are linked to problems such as insomnia, depression, anxiety and panic attacks. Prolonged or extreme stress has even been linked to a variety of physical ailments such as hypertension, headaches, arthritis, adrenal fatigue, weakened immune systems, cancer, infertility and many more. Stress can cause premature aging and a significant reduction in quality of life.
Dealing with stress the natural way
To cope with stress, many people self-medicate by using cigarettes, alcohol and other drugs. Pharmaceutical companies and the medical profession make billions of dollars in the treatment of stress-related illnesses and through the prescription of synthetic drugs. Many people become addicted to prescription medication in an attempt to find relief from depression, panic attacks, insomnia and other stress-related disorders.
In treating the symptoms of stress and anxiety, many psychologists use techniques aimed at progressive relaxation of all the major muscle groups in the body, which ultimately induces a state of deep relaxation and calm. Once this state has been reached and the person is completely relaxed, guided imagery may be used to provide further therapeutic benefits which have far reaching effects on the person's functioning even after the therapeutic session has ended.
Relaxation and meditation techniques have been clinically shown to play a significant role in promoting health and relieving stress. Clinical trials even suggest that regular meditation and relaxation can lower blood pressure and heart rate and result in a greater sense of emotional and physical well-being.
What is 'The Calm Within' CD?
The Calm Within is especially designed for relaxation and stress release. This CD was developed by our Clinical Psychologist, Michele Carelse, in conjunction with Derick Africa, a leading South African musician.
The Calm Within is designed to promote good health using a specially developed therapeutic sound technique. A combination of therapeutic script and soothing sound induces a state of deep relaxation, effectively relieving stress and promoting inner healing. Using exactly the same techniques employed in therapy, the listener is taken through a series of progressive relaxation steps, leading to a state of deep relaxation. Thereafter guided imagery is used to further enhance and expand therapeutic benefits.
The CD lasts approximately an hour and is created to provide all the benefits you would receive during an hour of relaxation therapy with a trained counselor. Regular use is extremely beneficial for both physical and emotional health and can also help to reduce dependence on prescription and other chemical methods of stress release.
How can 'The Calm Within CD' help you?
The Calm Within has been specially developed to assist in the treatment of:
Anxiety and panic attacks
Low self esteem
Apart from the therapeutic benefits outlined above, regular sessions using this therapeutic CD will teach you how to access a calm and peaceful place inside yourself - a skill that you can use at any time to calm and relax yourself, relieve anxiety and reduce tension. Regular use can help to reduce the reliance on harmful methods of stress-relief such as cigarettes, alcohol and psychiatric drugs and can prevent the damaging effects of stress on your body and mind.
'We all have the ability to calm ourselves and to create a sense of stillness and peace within us. However, many of us have lost touch with that quiet and peaceful space deep inside us and instead have learned to react to perceived stress with symptoms of panic and anxiety, feeling out of control and afraid. 'The Calm Within' CD has been created to provide immediate relief from the symptoms of stress and anxiety, but also to teach you how to access your own inner peace whenever you need it, putting you back in control feeling less stressed and more confident. I have helped many many clients using exactly the same techniques as you will find on the CD. Experience for yourself what it feels like to get in touch with your own inner calm.'
- Michele Carelse, Clinical Psychologist
How do I use this CD?
Although not essential, The Calm Within is best listened to on headphones to reduce outside interferences and promote deeper and undisturbed relaxation. The CD lasts approximately one hour and should be listened to from start to finish for maximum therapeutic effect.
Make sure that you are lying or sitting comfortably in a quiet, peaceful place. Because body temperature drops slightly during deep relaxation, wear loose-fitting clothes which are warm and comfortable. Wearing of socks is recommended too.
Caution: Do not listen to this CD while driving or operating heavy machinery.
How has 'The Calm Within' CD helped others?
'Stress has been a big problem for me the last few years, since I started my own business. I work long hours and every work day seems even more stressful than the last. My family was nearly at their wits end with me a few months ago as I was permanently on edge, barely eating anything and always grumpy with my husband and kids. A friend recommended your CD and I ordered it just to make her happy but it has actually been a turning point for me. Every evening I come home, kick off my shoes and listen to the calming CD. Everyone knows not to disturb me during this time and they don’t mind at all because I have become almost a different person since I started this little ritual. Afterwards I feel like I have switched off to the pressures of work and can just enjoy being with my kids and relaxing with my husband. I feel like this one CD has saved my sanity!'
- Joyce Durham
'I love your Calm Within CD - when I am too busy to get to my yoga classes (which is often), I listen to this at home and it really makes me feel human again. The minute I hear the words 'Close your eyes, take a deep breath and relax ...' I can just feel every muscle in my body melting and only have to think of these words to feel myself totally relaxing. After listening to this CD I feel relaxed and ready to face the world with a clear head. I don’t know how I ever lived without it!'
- Carine V.
What else can I do to relieve stress?
The first step in dealing with chronic stress is to recognize your symptoms and decide to make changes to combat this negative force.
Address any factors in your lifestyle that cause you unnecessary stress and make changes where possible. If sitting in a traffic jam on your way to work is starting each day off in a negative and stressful way, arrange ways to alleviate this stress. One example could be to leave the house early, miss the traffic and spend time listening to 'The Calm Within' once you arrive at the office, before starting your working day.
Exercise and physical activity is one of the best ways to beat stress and tension. Prioritize getting active in your daily life and reap the numerous rewards exercise will bring - for both your mental and physical well-being.
Manage your time effectively by prioritizing essential tasks and planning your activities and time each day.
Watch your diet - alcohol, caffeine, convenience foods high in sugar and fats and tobacco all put a strain on your body's ability to cope with stress. Try to eat a balanced diet and include plenty of fruit, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein in order to gain optimum health for dealing with everyday stressors.
Feelgood Health AdrenoBoost is a herbal remedy especially formulated to promote the health of your adrenal glands - which are extremely important in regulating your body's response to stress.
Feelgood Health PureCalm and MindSoothe natural remedies are effective, safe and healthy alternatives to prescription antidepressants and anxiety medication.
Get enough rest and try to go to sleep and wake up at regular times everyday.
Realise that no human being is perfect- including you!
Allow yourself leisure time to relax on your own or have fun with those you love.
