Understanding the brain

The human brain is an organ of the body found in the skull, at the top of the spinal cord and is the ‘control centre’ of the nervous system. It is responsible for controlling and co-ordinating all body functions, as well as intellectual or cognitive functions like memory, concentration, learning, focus, etc. The brain is also involved in the experience of emotions and in decision making.

The operations of individual cells and areas of the brain are reasonably well understood. The brain is an extremely complex processing system, working in harmony with the organism and is capable of adapting to change, whether that be change in the environment or an injury to brain tissue.

Although we are able to ‘map’ the brain and we have a reasonable knowledge of how it works, many brain functions are still a mystery to modern science.

What is our brain ‘capacity’?

There is an urban myth that we only use about 10% of our brain’s capacity and this is in fact not true! We use nearly every part of our brain and our brain is active most of the time.

However, just like any other organ in our bodies, the brain is affected by factors like diet, environment, lifestyle and overall health.

Is it possible to boost brain functioning?

The short answer is YES! Because the brain is a living organ, we can do many things to keep it functioning at its best.

Here are some of the best things you can do to get the most out of YOUR brain!

• Get enough sleep

Just as your computer benefits from being switched off, so does the brain benefit from regular ‘down time’ while you sleep. While you are sleeping, the cells of your body and your brain ‘rejuvenate’ themselves and sleep is essential for cellular health.

In addition, your brain performs certain organisational functions while you are sleeping, assimilating and storing information and making sense of what you learnt during the day.

• Eat the right foods

We have all heard the saying ‘A healthy mind in a healthy body’ and it is very true that a healthy diet will help your brain to function optimally and there are certain nutrients that are essential for brain health.

Good brain boosting foods are whole grain, low GI foods, oily fish (e.g. salmon), seeds rich in Omega 3 fatty acids (chia seeds, linseed oil, pumpkin seeds, soya beans), broccoli (high in vitamin K), tomatoes (containing lycopene), berries like blueberries & blackberries, nuts, leafy green veggies and certain herbs like sage and rosemary.

• Exercise regularly

Brains need oxygen to function well and the supply of oxygen to the brain is crucial for concentration and cognitive functioning! Oxygen supply to the brain relies on good circulation, which can be achieved by regular exercise.

Young children should be encouraged to play outside rather than sit in front of a TV screen, while older students and adults should build daily exercise into their lives.

Make it your motto to ‘Get Moving’ this year!

• Stop Smoking

If you smoke, one of the best things you can do for your brain is to quit! Smoking restricts the flow of oxygen to all organs, including the brain and less oxygen means less brain power!

If you need help to stop smoking, Feelgood Health has a program to help!
