1. Check your BMI

Before you do anything else, the first step is to check your BMI (Body Mass Index). If you are a gym member, you can visit your local gym and ask one of the trainers to measure your body fat. Your BMI reading  is a formula using your weight in kilos and divided by your height in meters squared – this reading will determine whether you are overweight, obese or extremely obese.

2. Set weight loss goals

Once you have determined how much you weigh, you can take action and start setting goals to lose the weight. Set a goal to lose 1 to 2 kg per week in six months. As with any goal that you are setting for yourself, it is important to plan beforehand. Decide what course of action you will take to lose the weight. Are you going to join a gym? Will you be removing sugar from your diet? Do you want eat healthily and incorporate exercise into your lifestyle? 4. Watch your portions

5. Commit to exercise

9. Pack your own work lunch

How often do you get a takeaway sarmie or pie for lunch? If you are always eating from a fast food place, then there is no need to wonder why you are struggling to keep the weight off. Let this be the year where you pack a healthy lunch and in that way you have more control of what you eat. Yes, you’ll have to put in a bit more effort to pack a lunch the night before or in the morning but you’ll soon see the rewards on your hips and in your pocket. Buying lunches are expensive and will save you a good few rand in the long run.

10. Keep healthy snacks at home and at the office

It’s tempting to reach for unhealthy snacks when you are at home or at work. Stock up on low-calorie snacks and treats such as Greek yoghurt with raspberries, popcorn, hummus with celery or carrot sticks, seed bars, dark chocolate or a handful of almonds, walnuts or pecan nuts.

Remember to have a healthy snack option mid morning and late afternoon to stave off the hunger pangs and boost your energy levels throughout the day.
