Reasons why it's important for women to put themselves first
Too many women are burned out. Yep, we're tired, exhausted and SO close to having a mental breakdown! In the midst of balancing our careers, studies, kids, husbands, friends, pets, finances and housework, women leave out the most important thing: self-care! And while we're juggling it all with smiles on our faces and our brains short-circuiting, we somehow manage to nurture everyone else, lend a listening ear to everyone else and make sure everyone else is happy! Until one day, BOOM, you explode! All it takes is for your partner to not put their dirty clothes in the laundry basket. Or perhaps your colleague asked you to cover their shift for the third time this month. Maybe your mother-in-law made an unwanted comment about your parenting style! The smallest thing can set you off at this point, and let's be honest - it feels GREAT to let off that pent-up steam!
No matter how your life may be structured (whether you're a business owner, a stay-at-home mom or a university student in your twenties), there seems to be an unhealthy pattern of women putting other peoples' needs before their own. We struggle to say no in fear of disappointing others and will make sure everyone else is healthy, happy and relaxed, while neglecting to give ourselves that same love and care. In fact, women are likely to feel guilty or selfish when they take time out for themselves!. In many cases, loved ones may make women feel ashamed about putting themselves first!
The healthiest thing a woman can do when she's feeling overworked and stressed is to stop and take some time out to care for herself! While this may seem obvious, many women struggle with the idea of putting themselves first. The truth is that when women make self-care a priority, it benefits both them AND their loved ones. Making self-care a priority prevents her from burning out or even from becoming ill due to stress! We're able to get things done more efficiently when we're not so exhausted, and our mood will certainly be elevated and more pleasant.
If we haven't yet convinced you to make your self-care a priority, here are some reasons why it is important for women to nurture themselves regularly!
Oxygen mask concept
You know how airplane hostesses always tell you that if the oxygen masks drop down, you must ALWAYS put yours on FIRST before helping anybody else? The reason is simple: how can you help anybody else breathe if you're unable to breathe yourself?! The same applies to women helping others. How can women effectively help others while their own energy reserves are depleted? If a woman makes sure that she's happy, healthy and rejuvenated, she's better able to support and nurture her loved ones! Remember, you can't give from an empty bucket.

You'll do better at work
Women who constantly put others first are more likely to suffer from lethargy and feel unmotivated. Getting up in the morning for work can be a struggle, and your workload can often feel overwhelming! It doesn't help that at the end of a long day, you still have to go home, cook meals, get the kids to bed, tidy the house or study! Sometimes you need to stop for a second and think about what will help you manage all your responsibilities. Remember, asking your partner or family for help is not a sign of weakness, it's actually the wisest thing you can do. You'll be surprised at how many people are willing to help you out! Another great idea is to set a coffee (or wine) date at least once a month with your closest besties, where you can step outside of your 'daily life' and touch base with your fun and relaxed self!
While on the subject of ‘help’, remember that it's not ALL your responsibility, with
others lending a hand when they feel inclined to! Learn to distinguish between things which are your sole responsibility and those which should be shared responsibilities that should not be constantly borne by you alone. If you find the discussion difficult and this is a pattern in your life, visit a therapist that can help you to learn to speak to your partners, work colleagues, siblings, etc. about shared responsibilities and fair arrangements about how they should work.

What's good for the goose is good for the gander
If you're a mother, life can be pretty tedious and crazy at the same time! Your days merge into each other as you're constantly repeating the same routine over and over again, while having to manage your kids' extreme emotions (as well as your own) AND balance life's other duties! Without taking a break from all the chaos, it's easy to find yourself losing your patience really quickly and lashing out at your kids! Have you ever felt so overwhelmed by it all, that when your child goes into tantrum mode, you end up losing your marbles, which in turn makes your toddler's tantrum escalate into a complete and utter meltdown, and you both end up crying in a ball on the floor? That's happened to me a few too many times than I'd like to admit! The funny thing is that these situations could have been completely avoided if I had have prioritised 'me' time. I would have been a lot more patient, calm, grounded and refreshed after a little break!

Your relationship will thrive
If you're constantly giving to others, you may find yourself feeling a bit of resentment. Women often go out of their way to make their partners feel special, or do more than their share in the housework or with the kids. While we expect to be treated in the same way, expectations often lead to disappointment. You shouldn't change the way you naturally want to spoil your partner, but you should at least set boundaries! Part of self-care is telling others what you would like from them and not allowing them to treat you any less than you deserve! If you find yourself dishing out more than what's being served to you, it's common for resentment to start creeping in and taking a toll on your relationship. However, if you take charge and let your partner know what you would like from him/her, your relationship will get stronger! A relationship built on understanding, communication and respect is highly rewarding!
