Amazing Health Benefits of Hemp Seed

Amazing Health Benefits of Hemp Seeds plus a yummy Hemp Seed & Pumpkin Pate Recipe!

hemp seed health benefits

Hemp seeds are hailed as one of the most powerful super foods because they are jam packed with nutritional value and have incredible healing benefits! They originate from the seeds of the hemp plant, Cannabis sativa which is from the same species as cannabis (marijuana). The hemp plant is often confused with the marijuana plant because they not only resemble each other but are also from the same family.  However, as hemp seeds contain only minute amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), they have no psychoactive effect, and are used for their therapeutic effect, rather than their psychoactive benefits. In fact, regular use of hemp seeds can provide many health benefits, acting as a perfect natural booster for your overall health and wellbeing.

Read on as we share some of the amazing benefits of Hemp Seeds – and don’t miss our tasty recipe for Hemp & Pumpkin Seed Pate!

What are the health benefits of hemp seeds?

 1. Hemp Seeds are high in nutrition value

With their mild, nutty flavor, hemp seeds can be eaten raw, cooked or roasted. Hemp seeds are incredibly nutritious and rich in protein, healthy fats and other essential minerals.  They are a great source of protein and contain high amounts of magnesium, calcium, potassium, sodium, phosphorus, iron, zinc and vitamin E. These “super seeds” also contain all 20 amino acids as well as 9 essential amino acids which our bodies cannot produce. Hemp seeds are rich in essential fatty acids, omega -3 (alpha-linolenic) and omega-6 (linoleic acid), and gamma linolenic acid (GLA) which is also an essential omega-6 fatty acid.

In addition, hemp seeds are also allergen free making them the perfect food choice for people with food intolerances. Hemp seeds are gluten free, wheat free, soy free, lactose and dairy free. To ensure that they also contain no preservatives, unwanted pesticides or other chemicals, make sure that you buy organic hemp seeds such as Hemp Seed Protein from Superfoods (available online or from the Feelgood Health shop in Westlake Cape Town.

2. Hemp Seeds help with digestion

Whole hemp seeds are an excellent source of fibre. They have a soluble fibre content of 20% and insoluble fibre content of 80% which helps to keep you regular and cleanse the colon. This fibre also feeds the ‘good’ bacteria in your gut thereby helping to strengthen your immune system.

Remember to always choose whole hemp seeds as de-hulled or shelled hemp seeds have the fibre-rich shell removed.   If you struggle with constipation or digestive problems, try adding Hemp Seeds to your diet, along with Feelgood Health’s Natural Moves and Gastronic Dr to improve digestive health.

3. Hemp Seeds reduce the risk of heart disease

Hemp seed contains all the essential ingredients such as protein, healthy fats and fibre to promote a healthy heart. Studies show hemp seeds contain high amounts of the amino acid arginine which helps to lower blood pressure and reduce heart disease. Furthermore the soluble fibre in hemp seeds may also help to reduce blood sugar levels and regulate cholesterol levels, thereby providing additional benefits for cardiovascular health. Gamma-linolenic acid in hemp seeds reduces inflammation which may decrease the risk of heart disease. Add 2 tablespoons of hemp seeds to your morning smoothie to lower blood pressure and reduce cholesterol levels. Also see the following natural remedies from Feelgood Health: CholestoRite (for balanced cholesterol levels) and High-Rite (for balanced blood pressure)

4. Hemp Seeds are good for hormone health

Hemp seeds are rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). GLA produces prostaglandin, which is vital to supplement hormone health. Studies show that prostaglandin helps with PMS symptoms and reduces breast pain and tenderness, fluid retention, irritability and depression. GLA in hemp seeds can also benefit menopausal women as it balances hormones and reduces inflammation. Use natural remedies from Feelgood Health such as Femalite to relieve PMS, Don Quai to balance hormones and MellowPause for hot flashes and to address menopausal symptoms.

5. Hemp Seeds improve skin disorders

Hemp seed is extremely beneficial for the skin, especially skin disorders such as eczema and psoriasis. It improves dry, red, flaky skin and itchiness as well as the overall condition of the skin. The oil in hemp seeds contains polyunsaturated and essential fatty acids with a good amount of omega-3 and omega-6.  It helps to penetrate the inner layers of the skin deeply resulting in soft, smooth skin and also promotes healthy cell growth. Keep your skin in great condition by eating a few tablespoons of hemp seed every day – include it in your cereal, smoothie, salad or trail mix for a healthy snack! Treating your skin topically with pure hemp seed oil can also make the world of difference. We love Soil Organic Hemp Seed Oil, applied directly onto the skin to relieve dryness, prevent aging and calm itchy, flaky or inflamed skin.

6. Hemp seeds reduce joint pain and symptoms of arthritis

According to a study published in the Arthritis and Rheumatism journal, the GLA found in hemp seeds greatly reduced the symptoms of arthritis. The combination of omega 3 and omega 6 and other essential minerals help to reduce inflammation and improve flexibility and movement. If you suffer from arthritis, increase your intake of hemp seeds or take 1 tablespoon of hemp seed oil daily. Try an all-natural remedy such as MobiLive specially formulated to treat arthritis and joint pain together with Solgar’s Extra Strength Glucosamine Chondroiton & MSM supplement to reduce inflammation and heal damaged cartilage.

7. Hemp Seeds promote weight loss

Hemp seed is an excellent weight loss supplement. It acts as a natural appetite suppressant, helps to reduce sugar cravings and keeps you full for longer. Add 4 tablespoons of these seeds to your meals to keep hunger pangs at bay. Use Hemp Seeds together with EcoSlim, a herbal slimming remedy from Feelgood Health to kick-start your weight loss journey.

Hi Annalie,

Thank you for reaching out to us!

How much Hemp Seed Powder you take per day depends on how much protein you are already getting in your diet as well as how active you are. It is recommended that women need approximately 46 grams of protein daily however, if you are very active, this amount will increase.

You should be taking in approximately 0.8 grams of Hemp Protein Powder per kilogram daily. This amount will increase if you exercise regularly (up to 1.8 grams per kilogram).

I hope that you have found the above to be helpful. Pleas let me know if you have any questions.

What is the quantity for save use of Hemp seed please?

Feelgood Health Team - May 10, 2019

Good day and thanks for your question on our Feelgood Health blog.

The healthiest foods are fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as lean fish, chicken and not too much red meat. Steamed or grilled food is better than fried and we recommend using olive oil to cook with. Nuts are also healthy for you!

We love to recommend making smoothies using superfoods (follow this link for our Superfoods collection: https://www.feelgoodhealth.co.za/collections/superfoods-for-super-health-ancient-abundant-energy) as well as adding sprouts to your salads and smoothies (follow this link for our selection of sprouts: https://www.feelgoodhealth.co.za/collections/sprouting-seeds-sprouting-kits). This is a great way to add top quality nutrients to your diet!

Please let us know if you have any questions.
Kind Regards
