HOW TO: Make your own natural homemade shampoo and conditioner
In the final episode of our four-part series, we show you how to make your own shampoo and hair conditioner at home using all-natural ingredients. Most of us wash our hair far too often and yes, we have been sucked into believing that washing our hair everyday is a good thing!
In reality, most commercial shampoos and conditioners contain chemicals which not only strip your hair of its natural oils and can also be absorbed into the skin.
As usual, Feelgood Health has some healthier alternatives for you! Try the “no poo” shampoo method (baking soda shampoo) which eliminates the use of commercial shampoos completely and watch the great results after a just few washes only.
The conditioner recipes offer deep conditioning treatments for hair that needs lots of tender loving care – lots of yummy ingredients are included that you’ll find in your kitchen!
Basic Shampoo Recipe (no poo method)
Ingredients
1. 1 Tablespoon baking soda
2. 1-2 cups warm water
3. Empty plastic bottle or container
Directions
Spoon the baking soda in the empty plastic bottle or container. Add the warm water slowly. Make sure that the water is WARM in order for the baking soda to dissolve. The mixture will produce lather or suds rather than foam.
Shake well if the mixture is in a bottle or stir if it is in a container.
You can now wet your hair and scalp, pour some of your homemade shampoo and massage into your roots. Rinse normally as you would with any other shampoo.
NB. Baking soda is such an amazing ingredient because it removes product build up and leaves your hair feeling more manageable! To the basic recipe above, you can add other natural ingredients according to the special need of your hair.
• For hair with dandruff
If you have dandruff, simply mix 2 drops of tea tree essential oil with 2 tablespoons of baking powder and some water in a re-purposed bottle or container and shake well before using.

• For oily hair
Mix 2 to 3 drops of citrus based essential oil such as lemon, lime or sweet orange to your basic shampoo mixture. The citrus essential oils are excellent when used to control oil.
For shampoo using egg yolks and lemon or vinegar: Another natural homemade natural shampoo alternative for oily hair is to combine 2 egg yolks with 2 teaspoons of lemon juice or vinegar. Work the mixture into your hair and allow it to set for a few minutes before rinsing. This shampoo should be done occasionally.

Natural herbal conditioner recipe
Apple cider vinegar rinse has long been used as a cleaning agent and conditioner for hair. Here is a fabulous natural homemade herbal hair conditioner using ingredients you can find in your kitchen!
Ingredients
1. ½ cup apple cider vinegar
2. 2.5 cups of boiling water
3. ¼ sprig of rosemary
4. 1 bag of herbal tea
5. Bottle or container
Directions
Pour the water into the bottle or container and slowly add the rest of the ingredients. Allow the mixture to sit for at least 30 minutes before using to allow the benefits of the herbs to infuse into the hot water and to cool down.
Shake vigorously before use. You can use ¾ cup of the apple cider vinegar rinse every time you condition your hair. Your hair will feel cleaner, less tangled and shinier.
Deep conditioning hair treatments
A deep conditioning treatment works wonders for tresses especially if your hair feels dry or damaged. Use ingredients straight from your kitchen to achieve smooth, silky hair.
Homemade deep conditioning treatment for dry hair
Mash ½ banana, ½ avocado pear and 3 tablespoons of mayonnaise together. Add three tablespoons of organic cold pressed coconut oil (heat slightly if necessary to soften if necessary).
Once all ingredients are well blended, massage well onto damp hair. Wrap your hair in plastic or a shower cap for at least 15 minutes before rinsing.
(Visit Feelgood Health for the Crede Organic Coconut Oil – Unit 6, Westlake Lifestyle Centre, Westlake Business Park, Cape Town or contact 021 797 0193 to order)
For normal hair
Blend equal parts of mayonnaise, olive oil, raw egg and plain yoghurt together and massage well onto scalp and damp hair. Wrap your hair in plastic or a shower cap for at least 15 minutes before rinsing, first in cool water (so that the egg does not cook on your hair!), then in warm water.
