Apricot kernels are quickly becoming the new craze in the alternative health industry as discoveries are constantly being made about how effective they are in protecting cells due to high levels of Laetrile, also called Amygdalin or Vitamin B17.

There is a lot of controversy about whether or not apricot kernels are safe for human consumption and, if you’re reading this article, you may be wondering if this is all just a conspiracy theory! While conventional medicine slams apricot kernels as being a sham or even poisonous, other sources claim that apricot kernels can help to treat or prevent cancer. Most of our Feelgood Health customers like to do their own research and we would certainly encourage this in the case of adding apricot kernels to your daily regime!

Before we go into the positive impact that these wonder kernels have on your body, let’s take a look at what apricot kernels actually are, as well as what they contain in order for you to get a better understanding…

Many would assume that the apricot kernels is the entire pit of the apricot however this is not the case. The apricot kernels is actually inside the pit! If you cracked open an apricot pit, you would find a small almond-shaped seed (that could easily be mistaken for an almond)! The kernels taste wildly bitter as they contain a high volume of Amygdalin (Laetrile or B17) (another controversy – but by now you will have noticed that this innocent little kernel is filled with controversies!)

Amygdalin is a nitroloside that contains four natural substances; one bound denzaldyhide, two glucose molecules and one bound cyanide. Please be aware that bound cyanide IS NOT poisonous! It is free cyanide that causes poisoning. It is the high quantity of amygdalin that makes apricot kernels effective in treating cancer patients.

Let us take a look at why YOU should be including apricot kernels into your diet and what they contain:

  • Amygdalin – alternative health practitioners say that Amygdalin may help to treat or prevent cancer (without compromising the immune system!)
  • Iron – helps to metabolize proteins as well as to produce red blood cells and hemoglobin
  • Vitamin C – supports overall immune functioning
  • Antioxidants – promote good health, radiant skin and protect against diseases
  • Potassium and Sodium – support healthy electrolyte balance
  • Calcium – supports strong and healthy teeth and bones

If you are new to apricot kernels, it is important that you start slowly with one apricot kernel at a time, 3 or 4 times a day – to allow your body to get used to them and then build this number up slowly. People differ in the amount they need, based on weight, age, health levels and diet. Some people take 20 – 30 kernels daily, for medicinal purposes, especially if their health is compromised. As a general protective tonic, however, 3-5 apricot kernels daily are recommended. If you are using large amounts of apricot kernels daily, it is best to do so under the supervision of your holistic health practitioner.

Caution: apricot kernels are not recommended for children, during pregnancy or for breastfeeding moms!

As we said earlier, apricot kernels are wildly bitter and although many people eat them ‘just like that’, the bitter taste can take some getting used to! For those who like to disguise the taste, the best way to do this is in a healthful smoothie!! Here is our suggestion!

Good day Greg

Thank you for your query on our blog: Everything YOU need to know about the powerful health benefits of Apricot Kernels (plus a FREE delicious Apricot Kernel Smoothie recipe)!

To answer your questions, you do NOT need to boil or cook the apricot kernels first. They should be consumed raw, either by being chewed, or by being added to a smoothie. Because they are very bitter, we recommend adding it to a smoothie to ‘mask’ the bitterness.

Start with 3 kernels per day and slowly increase. If your mother displays signs of nausea, reduce back one kernel. The time in which to see improvement differs from person to person, so it would be irresponsible of us to give you a time frame.
We wish you and your mother all the best

Hello Feelgoodhealth

Thanks for the great info.
I have been doing a fair bit of reading on this subject.
My Mom is currently battling brain and bone cancer.

The clarification you provide is great as there’s a lot of scare tactics on these kernels.
I read on many sites the recommended amount is no more than 3 an hour and no more than 10 a day but that differs from person to person. I’ve seen posts of much higher.
As you mention start off slow with one and build up.

Is there any prep needed for these kernels or can be simply put in the blender raw. I’ve read you need to boil them to release the toxic cyanide.

We’re thinking of putting them in my Moms smoothies.
She’s getting back to two smoothies a day. Morning and afternoon.

Is there any other precautions we should be taking?
Don’t want to introduce any additional problems other than what’s she’s already dealing with.
Also how quickly has it been noted to see any affects of improvement?

Thanks very much
