Could food be making your pet ill? What to do?

Could food be making your pet ill? What to do?

Food may be making your beloved pet sick. Or more importantly, food preparation or the wrong 'treats'. Pet diarrhea is a common occurrence amongst pets all year round. While you might be all too aware of common culprits such as changing your pet’s diet or a change in water, the manner in which your pet gets fed as well as the time you feed your pet could be contributing to their digestive problems...

Food Rules: What not to do!

Here’s what not to do:

  1. Food can spoil VERY quickly, so keeping your pet’s food fresh AT ALL TIMES is essential.
  2. If your pet is used to eating outside, DON’T leave your pet’s meal there all day long as food can become rotten in no time at all.
  3. DON'T give your pet food and leave it for them to eat it when they please. Make sure they eat it within 15 minutes of giving it to them. This includes fresh food as well as pellets.
  4. DON'T give your pet unhealthy treats such as refined human foods, NEVER onions, chocolate or peach pits (which can be fatal).
  5. AVOID feeding your dog only once per day; your dog needs energy to run and bark and play during the day and a hungry dog that is only fed once per day will eat too much too soon and will then pay for it later. Rather split the meal; give a little bit more in the morning and the smaller half at dinnertime.
  6. DON'T LEAVE treats lying around in the sun. If you give your dog a bone, don’t let it lie around in the garden for your furry friend to gnaw on it later as this attracts flies and bacteria which can pose serious risks to their digestive health.
