How to make natural dog toothpaste
Learn how to make your very own doggy toothpaste.... Using only natural ingredients, this toothpaste will freshen your dog’s breath, prevent plaque build-up and keep teeth and gums healthy and strong. Here is our natural doggy toothpaste recipe.
What you will need
• 1 beef or vegetable stock cube
• 2 tablespoons baking soda
• 1 teaspoon cinnamon or dried or fresh parsley
• ½ cup organic coconut oil
• 1 tablespoon water
• Mixing bowl
• Container or jar with a lid
Directions
1. Dissolve the beef or vegetable stock cube in the water in the mixing bowl. The stock cubes add a tasty flavour to the toothpaste
2. Add the baking soda and cinnamon to the stock cube mixture. Baking soda has a mild abrasive effect which helps to remove plaque and whiten teeth while cinnamon makes doggy breath smell much nicer.
3. Now, add the coconut oil into the mixing bowl and mix all the ingredients together thoroughly and until the consistency is even. The coconut oil binds and holds all the ingredients very well together.
4. Pour the mixture into a container, seal tightly and store at room temperature. No need to keep it in the fridge!
A few things about brushing
1. Choose a time when your dog is fairly relaxed to begin brushing – a good time is usually after you’ve taken him for a long walk or he’s had some exercise. If he seems unusually stressed, use PetCalm – a 100% homeopathic remedy to reduce anxiety and stress in pets. This will calm him down nicely and make it easier to clean his teeth.
2. If you haven’t been brushing your dog’s teeth, you need to get him used to the idea of you fiddling in his mouth! Initially, let him lick the doggy toothpaste off your fingers. Practice massaging your dog’s lips with your finger first in a circular motion and then move onto his teeth and gums.
3. Next, you can progress to placing the tooth brush into his mouth so that he’ll become use to the different texture.
4. When you clean your dog’s teeth, the brushing technique is very important! Hold the brush at a 45 degree angle to the teeth and start cleaning in small, circular motions.
5. Focus on working on one area of the mouth at a time – brush the upper canine teeth first. See how many teeth your dog will allow you to do first and gradually increase the number.
6. Don’t let your dog eat this toothpaste in large amounts – If your dog eats baking soda in large amounts, it can cause electrolyte imbalances and large amounts of coconut oil may cause diarrhea
7. Wipe your dog’s teeth with a clean, damp washcloth when you are done.
8. Brush at least two to three times per week – the more often you do it, the easier it gets! PROMISE!
