Summertime Pet Care!

Summertime Pet Care!

Summer is a time of sunshine and outdoor fun for both you and your furry friends. However, the summer season can also pose potential dangers for our beloved pets. Pets that are overexposed to heat can suffer from heat stroke and die. Taking the necessary precautions is important to protect and keep them comfortable and safe during summer.

Be cool!

  1. Provide plenty of clean, fresh water and adequate shade for your pet so that they can stay cool and avoid dehydration.
  2. While dogs need their daily exercise, avoid exercising them in very hot weather.
  3. Gravel and tar roads tend to become excruciatingly hot from the summer sun and as a result will burn your poor little pets’ paws. Rather take them for a walk early in the morning or the evening when it is cooler.
  4. Never leave your pet in a parked car for any length of time because they can suffer heatstroke or brain damage. Pets do not sweat and their body temperature is regulated by panting. When left in a parked car, the temperature can reach fatal levels.

Other important precautions to take:

  1. Control fleas and ticks, which are rife in summer, by investing in an effective flea and tick repellent. Also, remember that the fleas that we see on our pets represent just 5% of the flea population – there are also eggs, larvae and pupae to consider. As well as investing in an effective flea and tick repellent - try all-natural tick and flea remedies such as Vondi's Khakibos Tick & Flea Powder, Khakibos Tick and Flea Shampoo and Khakibos Tick and Flea Spray. De-worm your pet every three to six months -speak to your vet about the best de-worming protocol. Animals may also suffer with grass allergies and itching from the heat.
  2. Just like humans pets also get sunburned so apply a vet recommended sunscreen to pets with light-coloured fur on their ears and noses to reduce their risk of sunburn and skin cancer.
  3. Take extra care when using fertilisers, insecticides and plant food in your garden. These substances are harmful for animals even when small amounts are ingested.
  4. In very hot weather, wet your dog down with cool water to help maintain a normal body temperature.
