Common causes of male and female infertility, plus natural and affordable solutions

If you're struggling to conceive, you may be feeling defeated, depressed and even ashamed. However, you'd be surprised to hear that infertility has been ranked the 5th highest serious global disability by the World Health Organisation (WHO). Difficulties in conceiving are far more common than you may expect and affect up to 20% of South African couples.

Many couples who have been trying to conceive often blame infertility for their difficulty falling pregnant. Dr Frances Paterson, urogynaecologist at The Urology Hospital (Pretoria, South Africa), explains that not all couples who experience fertility problems are actually infertile. Before going down the route of in vitro fertilisation (IVF), adoption, surrogacy or other alternatives, it may be worthwhile to determine whether you or your partner are in fact unable to reproduce, or whether there is an underlying health issue which may be able to be solved!

Excerpt from parent24.com on the topic of fertility:

Dr Paterson says for about 80% of couples, the cause of infertility is either an ovulation problem, blockage of the fallopian tubes, or a sperm problem, all of which can be discussed in a consultation.

“A consultation may involve discussing your general health, medication, sexual history and a physical exam. For men, we may conduct a sperm analysis and for women, testing may include a physical examination, blood tests, an ultrasound and x-rays,” Dr Paterson added.

Before you convince yourself that you or your partner are permanently infertile, take a look below at common reasons why men and women struggle to conceive. A huge weight may be lifted off your shoulders as you see that there are various natural solutions to help men and women increase their fertility and chances of having a baby!

What is infertility?

Infertility is the inability of a sexually active couple (male and female), not using any birth control, to get pregnant after one year of trying. Fertility problems can happen in women and men, and can have many causes!

Reasons why females may struggle to fall pregnant

1) ANOVULATORY CYCLES

Some women experience anovulatory cycles. This means that although a woman may be experiencing 'normal' menstrual cycles, she is not ovulating (releasing an egg). Anovulation may occur due to perimenopause, stress, imbalanced diet, hormone imbalances, anorexia or just by chance. In some, anovulatory cycles may be a once off occurrence and in others, it may be recurring. If you suspect you may have anovulatory cycles, contact a gynecologist who will prescribe a series of ultrasound examinations and blood tests.

Symptoms of anovulatory cycles:

  • Irregular periods
  • Short cycles (less than 21 days)
  • Periods that are often more than 10 days late
  • You have an endocrine disorder such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), increased prolactin, thyroid dysfunction
  • Difficulty falling pregnant

Natural solution: Fertile XX is a herbal fertility tonic formulated especially for women who are trying to fall pregnant. Fertile XX contains herbs that promote healthy and regular ovulation, corrects hormone imbalances underlying infertility, strengthens and tones fallopian tubes, promotes ovarian health, regulates menstrual cycle and boosts libido! Recommended for use along with Don Quai, a highly respected ancient herb that acts as a hormone balancer and tonic for the female reproductive system.

2) MENOPAUSE

Menopause is defined as the period in a woman's life (typically between the ages of 45 and 50) when menstruation ceases. As a woman ages, the number of eggs she has decreases and the quality of the remaining eggs also decrease. Women in their late 30s and older are generally less fertile than women in their early 20s. This naturally results in a decline in fertility and chances of conception. Additionally, production of the hormones oestrogen and progesterone is reduced, triggering many physical and mental changes or disturbances. Some women may begin menopause earlier than usual.

Symptoms of menopause:

  • Irregular periods
  • Complete lack of periods
  • Hot flashes
  • Mood changes
  • Night sweats
  • Weight gain
  • Loss of libido (sex drive)
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Headaches
  • Increased hair growth on areas such as face, neck, chest, and upper back
  • Difficulty falling pregnant

Natural solution: Don Quai is a highly respected ancient herb that acts as a hormone balancer and tonic for the female reproductive system, and has been used to provide long term relief from symptoms of menopause when taken regularly for between 3 and 6 months. Recommended for use along with MellowPause, a natural remedy that eases the transition into menopause, reducing hot flashes, irritability, insomnia, moodiness, acne and restlessness. Fertile XX is a herbal fertility tonic formulated especially for women who are trying to fall pregnant. Fertile XX contains herbs that promote healthy and regular ovulation, corrects hormone imbalances underlying infertility, strengthens and tones fallopian tubes, promotes ovarian health, regulates menstrual cycle and boosts libido!

3) ENDOMETRIOSIS

Endometriosis is a painful disorder where endometrial tissue grows outside your uterus. The endometrial tissue is only supposed to line your uterus, but in women who suffer from endometriosis, the tissue grows in the ovaries, Fallopian tubes and the tissue lining your pelvis.

Mayoclinic provides a clear outline of what happens to women who suffer from endometriosis: "With endometriosis, displaced endometrial tissue continues to act as it normally would — it thickens, breaks down and bleeds with each menstrual cycle. Because this displaced tissue has no way to exit your body, it becomes trapped. When endometriosis involves the ovaries, cysts called endometriomas may form. Surrounding tissue can become irritated, eventually developing scar tissue and adhesions — abnormal bands of fibrous tissue that can cause pelvic tissues and organs to stick to each other. Endometriosis can cause pain — sometimes severe — especially during menstrual periods. Fertility problems also may develop."

Symptoms of endometriosis:

  • Painful periods
  • Painful intercourse
  • Painful urination/bowel movements
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Difficulty falling pregnant

Natural solution: Don Quai is a highly respected ancient herb that acts as a hormone balancer and tonic for the female reproductive system, and helps to naturally reduce endometriosis. Recommended for use along with Endo-Ex which helps to relieve the symptoms of stubborn and painful endometriosis, without the risks of side effects often associated with conventional medicine and surgery. Fertile XX is a herbal fertility tonic formulated especially for women who are trying to fall pregnant. Fertile XX contains herbs that promote healthy and regular ovulation, corrects hormone imbalances underlying infertility, strengthens and tones fallopian tubes, promotes ovarian health, regulates menstrual cycle and boosts libido!

4) BLOCKED FALLOPIAN TUBES

Blocked Fallopian tubes may be caused by scar tissue, infection, and pelvic adhesions. This causes a problem for conception because the Fallopian tubes are responsible for transporting eggs from the ovaries to the uterus. The Fallopian tubes are also the places where conception happens! If a Fallopian tube is blocked, the passage for sperm to reach the eggs, as well as the path back to the uterus for the fertilised egg, is blocked. Blocked Fallopian tubes often don't cause any symptoms and may go unnoticed until the woman struggles to fall pregnant.

Symptoms of blocked Fallopian tubes:

  • Mild pain on one side of the lower abdomen
  • Difficulty falling pregnant

Natural solution: Don Quai is a highly respected ancient herb that acts as a hormone balancer and tonic for the female reproductive system, and helps to  strengthen and tone the uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries! Recommended to use alongside Fertile XX, a herbal fertility tonic formulated especially for women who are trying to fall pregnant. Fertile XX contains herbs that promote healthy and regular ovulation, corrects hormone imbalances underlying infertility, strengthens and tones fallopian tubes, promotes ovarian health, regulates menstrual cycle and boosts libido!

5) IRREGULAR CYCLES

Irregular menstruation is a condition where a woman's period continually falls outside of “regular” ranges for various reasons. People with irregular cycles may notice that their periods happen infrequently, frequently, or are just very unpredictable. Irregular menstruation can happen after menarche (the 2–3 years after menstruation begins), during perimenopause (beginning of menopause), after childbirth, during breastfeeding, after miscarriage, due to sleep disorders, chronic stress, eating disorders, while on certain medication, due to hormonal imbalance or endocrine disorders, and an unhealthy lifestyle.

Natural solution: Don Quai is a highly respected ancient herb that acts as a hormone balancer and tonic for the female reproductive system, and helps correct irregular periods and hormone imbalance. Fertile XX is a herbal fertility tonic formulated especially for women who are trying to fall pregnant. Fertile XX contains herbs that promote healthy and regular ovulation, corrects hormone imbalances underlying infertility, strengthens and tones fallopian tubes, promotes ovarian health, regulates menstrual cycle and boosts libido!

6) FIBROIDS

Fibroids are benign (non-malignant) tumours which develop in the uterus, made of smooth muscle cells and fibrous connective tissue. It's estimated that 70-80% of women will develop fibroids in their lifetime, many never having to receive treatment. The cause of fibroids is completely unknown, with many professionals assuming it's down to genetics and weight.

Symptoms of fibroids:

  • Heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Prolonged menstruation
  • Pelvic pain and inflammation
  • Frequent urination
  • Painful intercourse
  • Back ache
  • Difficulty falling pregnant

Natural solution: Don Quai is a highly respected ancient herb that acts as a hormone balancer and tonic for the female reproductive system, and helps  regulate menstruation, reduce pelvic pain and strengthen the uterus. Fertile XX is a herbal fertility tonic formulated especially for women who are trying to fall pregnant. Fertile XX contains herbs that promote healthy and regular ovulation, corrects hormone imbalances underlying infertility, strengthens and tones fallopian tubes, promotes ovarian health, regulates menstrual cycle and boosts libido!

7) POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder where a woman produces higher-than-normal amounts of male hormones. PCOS is a common cause of a woman's difficulty falling pregnant as she will often experience irregular periods, anovulation and multiple fluid-filled cysts in her ovaries. Doctors don’t know exactly what causes PCOS but it's believed that high levels of male hormones prevent the ovaries from functioning normally.

Symptoms of PCOS:

  • Missed or irregular periods
  • Excessive hair growth, usually on the face, chest, back or buttocks
  • Thinning hair on the head
  • Oily skin or acne
  • Weight gain or difficulty losing weight
  • Sleeping problems
  • Difficulty falling pregnant

Natural solution:  Don Quai is a highly respected ancient herb that acts as a hormone balancer and tonic for the female reproductive system, and helps reduce PCOS and balance out female hormones. Fertile XX is a herbal fertility tonic formulated especially for women who are trying to fall pregnant. Fertile XX contains herbs that promote healthy and regular ovulation, corrects hormone imbalances underlying infertility, strengthens and tones fallopian tubes, promotes ovarian health, regulates menstrual cycle and boosts libido!

Reasons why men may struggle to conceive

1) LOW SPERM COUNT

A low sperm count, also called oligospermia, is when semen contains fewer sperm than usual. A sperm count is considered low if a man has fewer than 15 million sperm per millilitre of semen. A complete absence of sperm is called azoospermia. A low sperm count means that there is a reduced chance of one of the male's sperm reaching their partner's egg. Low sperm counts may occur as a result of genetics, hormone imbalance, dilated testicular veins or physical injury to the testicles. Often, there will be no symptoms (other than difficulty conceiving).

Symptoms of low sperm count:

  • Low sex drive or erectile dysfunction
  • Swelling in the testicular area
  • Decreased facial or body hair (in the case of hormone imbalance)
  • Trouble conceiving

Natural solution: Fertile XY is formulated especially for men as a herbal fertility tonic, which improves the functioning of male sexual organs (prostate, seminal vesicles, testes, penis), increases sperm production and health, boosts testosterone and increases libido. Recommended alongside Stronga For Menmade from Mondia Whitei root powder (commonly known as African White’s Ginger) and traditionally used as an aphrodisiac to treat sexual weakness, prevent premature ejaculation and to increase testosterone and sperm production.

2) BLOCKAGES

Blockages or absences of the tubes responsible for transporting semen are the cause of around one in three cases of men struggling to conceive. Blockages in the tubes or absences of tubes may be due to infection, deformity, vasectomy or injury. Any part of the male reproductive tract can be blocked, depending on the cause of the blockage.

Symptoms of a blocked tube:

  • Difficulty ejaculating or small volumes of fluid ejaculated
  • Difficulty maintaining an erection (erectile dysfunction)
  • Loss of libido (sex drive)
  • Swelling or pain in the testicular area
  • Discomfort during urination or ejaculation
  • Trouble conceiving

Natural solution: Fertile XY is formulated especially for men as a herbal fertility tonic, which improves the functioning of male sexual organs (prostate, seminal vesicles, testes, penis), increases sperm production and health, boosts testosterone and increases libido.

3) DAMAGE TO THE TESTICLES

In about 30% - 40% of cases of male 'infertility', the problem is damage to the testes, the glands that produce sperm and testosterone (the main male sex hormone). This can result from infections such as mumps, radiation or chemotherapy, trauma, or surgery. Depending on the cause of damage to the testes, recovery make take a few days, a few weeks, years or never. With the right treatment, it's possible to overcome testicular injury and have a chance of conceiving a baby!

Natural solution: Fertile XY is formulated especially for men as a herbal fertility tonic, which improves the functioning of male sexual organs (prostate, seminal vesicles, testes, penis), increases sperm production and health, boosts testosterone and increases libido. Recommended alongside Stronga For Men, made from Mondia Whitei root powder (commonly known as African White’s Ginger) and traditionally used as an aphrodisiac to treat sexual weakness, prevent premature ejaculation and to increase testosterone and sperm production.

4) LIFESTYLE FACTORS

Lifestyle factors such as smoking, drinking alcohol, use of illegal drugs, obesity, psychological stress, unhealthy diet, and excessive caffeine intake can contribute largely to poor functioning male reproductive organs, hormonal imbalance, inadequate sperm production and low libido. Of course, all of the above will decrease the likelihood of conception!

Natural solution: If you're serious about conceiving, lifestyle changes won't be a difficult task. Take on a new exercise regime, start eating more healthy foods, stop smoking and cut down on your alcohol intake. Along with your healthy lifestyle changes, use Fertile XY, formulated especially for men as a herbal fertility tonic, which improves the functioning of male sexual organs (prostate, seminal vesicles, testes, penis), increases sperm production and health, boosts testosterone and increases libido. Recommended alongside Stronga For Menmade from Mondia Whitei root powder (commonly known as African White’s Ginger) and traditionally used as an aphrodisiac to treat sexual weakness, prevent premature ejaculation and to increase testosterone and sperm production.

5) HORMONE IMBALANCE

Rarely, male infertility or trouble conceiving results from a hormone deficiency. This can be caused by a pituitary gland tumour which disrupts normal levels of hormones that control testosterone and sperm production. It can also be triggered by an unhealthy lifestyle or genetics. One of the leading causes of male infertility is environmental pollution in the form of phthalates, BPA, dioxins, and PCB and plastics in food.

Symptoms of male hormone imbalance:

  • Loss of facial and body hair
  • Low libido
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Fatigue
  • Depression
  • Difficulty maintaining or building muscle mass
  • Weight gain
  • Trouble conceiving

Natural solution: Fertile XY is formulated especially for men as a herbal fertility tonic, which improves the functioning of male sexual organs (prostate, seminal vesicles, testes, penis), increases sperm production and health, boosts testosterone and increases libido. Recommended alongside Stronga For Menmade from Mondia Whitei root powder (commonly known as African White’s Ginger) and traditionally used as an aphrodisiac to treat sexual weakness, prevent premature ejaculation and to increase testosterone and sperm production. Eating whole, organic foods, instead of processed food, will also help to decrease the effects of environmental pollution on male fertility.
