The Benefits of Essential Oils + Our Top 6 Essential Oils that every family should have!
What are essential oils?
Essential oils have been around for centuries, and are also known as "the oil of the plant" as they comprise of concentrated plant oil extracts that have curative and calming effects. Organic essential oils are used today in aromatherapy and are a NATURAL alternative to synthetic medicines and treatment. Even better, the healing properties haven't been hindered with chemicals or pesticides!
They smell GREAT, they’re NATURAL and they have MANY helpful uses! Here’s HOW you can use essential oils and which ones we recommend you have in YOUR home! So long as they are used safely and in moderation, watch them make a difference to your life in the most convenient ways!
Aromatically
Essential oils are wondrous for creating a peaceful and calm aura to bring your energy levels up, or to destress you and minimise that anxiety. They can be burned in an oil burner or simply added to a bath! Our top 2 Aromatic oils are Lavender Oil and Ylang Ylang Oil!
Lavender is known for its relieving and calming properties as it lightens burdens and calms fears. It is also known to relieve headaches and insomnia and if applied to the skin (topically), reduces redness and inflammation- the perfect go-to after a tough working day for the adults and a tough day of playing outside for the kids!
Ylang Ylang oil is not only fun to try and say (pronounced EE-lang EE-lang- incase you never knew) but is also a very unique-smelling fragrance. It assists with hypertension, palpitations and rapid breathing and can be used as an antiseptic, aphrodisiac, antidepressant and hypotensive. This means that it heals wounds, eases muscle pain and makes you feel better on those down days. Definitely one to have in the house!
Topically
The benefits of applying essential oils to the skin are plentiful! Reflexology uses diluted essential oils to apply pressure to hands and feet to create an effect elsewhere in the body. It is also safe to apply tiny amounts of essential oil to wounds and burns should you need to. You can reap the rewards of immune support, muscle relief and skin care! When using essential oils externally on the skin, always bear in mind that they need to be softened by adding them to a carrier oil: coconut oil and body creams work just fine!
Frankincense Essential Oil can be used as an anti-ageing remedy if you pour a few drops in your daily moisturiser and body cream! It can also help relieve pain, cramps, constipation, headaches, anxiety, nausea, fatigue and mood swings (which helps both girlfriend and boyfriend, it seems)
Tea Tree Oil is well-known for being an antiseptic and anti-inflammatory and can be applied to acne, boils, insect bites, cold sores, psoriasis, burns and fungal infections. Conveniently dab a little of the effected areas once a day and see its power of healing! A definite MUST for those who seem to have bad luck with their skin!
Internally
Whilst in most cases it’s recommended to steer clear of ingesting oils, some oils can be ingested and their benefits enjoyed. The oil on our list for this one is Ginger Oil. Ginger oil significantly improves liver function and has a high count of antioxidants. It reduces inflammation and swelling, helping with bloating, swelling, pain and discomfort. It also treats vomiting and relieves respiratory conditions. In order to treat all of the above, simply add two drops of oil to a glass of water or cup of herbal tea to be drank slowly, and be comforted by the remedy’s healing effects.
Externally (at home)
Since essential oils are the concentration of plant extracts, they can be used around the home to clean and freshen the air. What’s more, they’re pretty easy to use. Lemon Oil is perfect to use around the house! Just pour a few drops in your liquid dish soap to scrub surfaces that leave a fresh citrus smell. You can also apply a few drops straight to nitty gritty areas that need a thorough scrub, like showers and floor corners! It also has antiseptic properties and encourages a light and happy mood- double score.
